About 14.5% of Indonesia's population has life insurance. The need for life insurance is not a primary need, so the purchase of these products are affected by many factors. Without seeing the factors that influence the purchase of non-primary products needs, the actual purchase of a product is preceded by an awareness of the need for these products by individuals. Given the low rate of life insurance policy by the community, this research was conducted to determine the level of public awareness of life insurance. Measurement of awareness of life insurance carried by distributing questionnaires to the respondents who are spread across several cities in Java, in terms of knowledge and understanding of the product. The community has knowledge of various life insurance products which can be purchased by them, but most only know that life insurance is a product for transferring the risk of death not as a product for transfering the risk of decreasing income. There is still a few respondents who understands the consumer's rights as an insurance customer. 49.5% of respondents have a high level of life insurance awareness but still limited to the knowledge of the product. They have not have a high level of product understanding.
