Abstract

As social eings, humans have an instinct to nurture social interaction with other individuals. It also applies to individuals with impairments or individuals with blindless. One among social behavior that arise in everyday life is prosocial behavior. Prosocial behavior is a helpful action taht benefits other people without necessarily providing any direct benefits to the person performing the act, and may even involve a risk for the person who helps (Baron, Bryne&Branscombe,2006). Adolescent with visual impairments may experience problems in relating with others and may influence their psychosocial development (Kef, 1999; Sacks & Wolffe, 2006), but instincts as social beings are expected to support its prosocial orientation. Prosocial orientation has a major role in an individual's social cpmpetence (Rydell, Hagekull & Bohlin,1997). Social competence defined as a set of skills and behaviors necessary to get along with others and be well-liked(Anderson and Messick 1974; Cavell 1990, Dodge 1985; Gresham 1986; Rubin and Rose-Krasnor 1992). Therefore, social competencies needed by adolescents, even though they have physical limitations such as individuals with visual impairments. Sixty-six adolescents (15 female) with visual impairments and seventy-one (25 female) typically developed adolscent participated in this study to reveal the prosocial orientation in adolscent as a control group in this study. This research is conducted to enriched the understanding of social behavior in visually impaired adolescents in Indonesia. This research implies that y knowing their prosocial abilities, adolescent with visual impairments, are expected to develop their social competence optimally even with their disabilities and society would pay more attention toward them.
