| Abstract: | The purposes of the research are to explain the components of the news articles and to find out the sentence types used in the lead of VOA news articles. The source of the data in this research is 25 news articles which are taken from VOA news randomly from June 2010. The methods used in this research are qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative method used to solve the problems and aims of the research. In presenting the data, the writer used quantitative method. The result of the research found that the common components structure in writing headline consists of WHO and WHAT. There are 44% or 11 headlines out of 25 headlines’ articles. The common components structure in writing lead consists of WHO, WHAT, HOW and WHERE. There are 16% or 4 leads out of 25 leads’ articles. The common components structure in writing body consists of WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, WHO, and HOW. There are 40% or 10 bodies out of 25 bodies’ articles. Based on this research, sometimes certain components do not exist in the news articles; in fact there are no headlines or leads which have complete components. The common sentence types in the leads are complex sentences. There are 65.9% or 29 sentences out of 44 sentences in 25 leads. But there is only 2.3% or 1 sentence out of 44 sentences in 25 leads that using compound sentence types |
