Learning Activities Management System (SPAP)

Abstract

Learning occurs when learners are actively involved in various learning activities. However, current content-centred e-learning promotes e-learning course developers to use various techniques and tricks to make contents more interesting and appealing to learners without much consideration given to how learners learn. The activity management capabilities in Learning Management Systems (LMS) are also very limited. Empahasis on learning objects development cause e-learning to be static, “fossilised”, have “dead content”, have low learner motivation and engagement besides creating impersonal and isolated environments. Hence there is a need to design and incorporate learning activities into e-learning system to enable active engagement in learning. This study was carried out to design and develop a learning activities management system (SPAP) for teachers to plan, manage and monitor learning activities and for students to carry out learning activities planned by teachers. The needs and specification design of SPAP was determined fron analyses of features and types of learning activities and methods of implementing learning activities. SPAP has five modules: registration, synopsis, authoring, monitoring and learner module. Acceptance testing of SPAP showed that teachers and learners have positive perception about the systems’s security, suitability, accurateness and satisfaction for modules tested.
